From the Coastguard Newsroom this evening

The Newlyn based Trawler Trevessa
"A 26 metre beam trawler is currently on fire 35 miles south of the Isles of Scilly with four people aboard. The trawler Trevessa which is registered in Newlyn made a Mayday at 4:37pm stating they had a fire in the engine room and had to leave the wheelhouse due to the amount of smoke and that they had deployed their liferaft.Falmouth Coastguard scrambled Rescue Helicopter 193 from RNAS Culdrose to the scene and requested the launch of the RNLI St Marys lifeboat from the Isle of Scilly. A broadcast to shipping in the area was also put out to vessels in the area and two vessels James RH Stevenson and the Billy Rooney responded and are now making their way to the distress vessel.Marc Thomas, Watch Manager, Falmouth Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:The crew aboard the vessel has managed to seal off the engine room. They are currently in the process of being winched to safety by the rescue helicopter. The lifeboat and other vessels should be on scene shortly to assist and the fate of the Trevessa will then be decided."
I gather that everyone is OK and hope they manage to save her !
Despite the forecast, we woke up to yet more rain, it reduced to a fine drizzle for a while, so I went out on the balcony to take these shots of the surfers. The large waves of yesterday were gone by this morning, but every now and then there was a good one. Sorry the weather didn't get any better !

Happy New Year to all !

The Victoria, Perranuthnoe

Had visitors today, so went to have a lunch at The Victoria.
A lovely meal as always !
Popped down to take a closer look at the wild sea. Unfortunately by then the light was very bad so they are very grainy, but you get the idea of what it was like !

Tuesday, 29 December 2009

Another really nasty day, rain and drizzle foremost of the day. We had a brief streak of brightness out on the horizon in late afternoon and looking at the Scillywebcam they had a nice patch of blue sky and a sunset.
The forecast is better for tomorrow.

A cold and windy day

The original forecast was quite good, but by this morning it had changed to cloudy with a strong South Easterly wind. The sun tried to put in appearance, but never succeeded. I watched the Emma Louise coming back into Newlyn really rocking and rolling and later three of the larger trawlers went out straight into the wind, getting a lot of white water over them. All along the coast that we can see from Penzance to Lamorna there are big splashes as the waves are pushed in that direction.

A walk towards Cudden Point

A lovely, but rather oddly shaped moon this evening - something to do with the atmosphere I suppose !
Cudden Point, with an empty looking container ship MSC Samantha out on the horizon - a sign of the times !
Still a few surfers out in the cold, cold water !
A very calm evening after a lovely day
Perranuthnoe - with smoke from all the wood burners rising

Fine but cold and not much beach to play on.

Happy Christmas

The sunset through one of the glass panels on the balcony
The beach this afternoon
Taken from Jim's perspective on the beach the sky looks very different.
Darker clouds appearing and later it did rain for a while - but at least it had been dry all day.

A sad day in West Cornwall

Foremost in our thoughts today are the two dead and over 40 injured people on the coach which overturned at Godolphin Bridge, near Townshend only a few miles from us.. We pass that spot often as we walk the dogs in the woods nearby. Such a sad ending to a happy trip to see the Mousehole Illuminations. I gather they were on that road as they were touring round the villages looking at the lights and they were heading for Godolphin.

It has been warmer today, with occasional sunny spells and very heavy showers of both rain and hail, so Jim took the dogs to the woods near St Hilary - still partially flooded, but the dogs love it there.

FV Emma Louise

For those who take a look at the AIS links this is a very murky distant shot of the Fishing Vessel Emma Louise - probably seen more than any of the other local boats & out in all weathers. She's just passing Mousehole on her way to Newlyn with what I assume is her last catch before taking some time off for Christmas.
Christmas Eve - should have known better - she's been out since 6am and is fishing South West of Lands End
The water flowing down the footpath providing Tilly with a nice drink.
Still waterlogged !

Spot the Pointer

Fortunately the centre of the wood is a little higher and drier !
