Rick Stein's - Porthleven

Porthleven -  The blue lights making everything blue as we arrive
 The entrance with flaming "pillars"
The boats in the harbour looking blue as well
We arrived first and sat down for a drink and waited for Jim's sister to arrive - looking at the harbour through the window.  Beware the Mojito that Jim's sister had £9.95 phew !
They have decided to carry on with the "Tapas" style menu with the choice of either having lots of the smaller dishes or treating one as a starter, followed by one of the mains - not a great choice there though !  Unfortunately you really need to all do the same thing but Jim and I went for the starter and main whilst the others went for lots of the smaller dishes.
Sadly me being the odd one out and not able to eat spicy food and not liking shellfish I was limited but really enjoyed the Lemon Sole Goujons  and the other mainly enjoyed the 7 smaller dishes of crab, prawns, and others I can't remember - but of course Jim & I still had the Char-grilled plaice to go - whereas the others had more or less finished  theirs -
There seemed to be no vegetables available - we ordered chips with the very large Plaice  and they rather resembled McDonalds rather than the delicious ones you would normally get with a meal like this- (although Jim loves thin chips).  Sadly both our Plaice were very undercooked and barely warm and if we had been on our own we would have sent them back - but since the others were waiting we carried on - not really finishing.
The puddings were OK but we were rather too disappointed by then to enjoy them.
They were reasonably busy, but not crowded, so no real excuse for bad cooking.  The bill - if you really want to know was £177.00 + tip for four of us - and it took a while to split the bill as the staff are still struggling with the hi-tec gadgets.
This is the sample menu - very similar to the one we had last night -  Many of you might love it - I know I'm the difficult one - but having enough of those small dishes to make a proper meal is pricey !
Not a patch on the Rick Stein Fish & Chip Restaurant in Falmouth where the fish has always been really well cooked and delicious.

  1. Thank you Sue for your review of the new restaurant. We like our fish well cooked also, so when we are down that way we will probably stick with The Square, The Victoria Inn, or Peppercorn. Never been disappointed with any of those lovely eating places. Nice to see some sun today between the heavy showers, great photo's from yesterday, keep them coming pleae.

  2. We didn't get many showers today - possibly only one whilst on a quick trip to Pz for Jim's Ginger Wine - when we got to Godolphin Woods it had stopped. Must have been lucky for a change !

  3. What a disappointment! Hopefully it is opening week problems which will be sorted out, as the menu sounds very much to my taste. I like tapas dining and the chance to try different kinds of seafood. Cooking fish is not easy so Rick Stein needs to make sure he has a competent executive chef in the kitchen. I wonder when the Fleet Street critics will be sent down to try the food? I'll keep watching the Guardian and Independent Online to see.
I am not sure I like all that blue light either. I wonder what the locals think who look down over the harbour. It is all a bit Disneyfied and cold looking.

    1. I was surprised that the council planners had allowed all that blue lighting - assume it was already there from the previous owner - who had opened it this Spring. I gather from Trip Advisor somments that the price of drinks is indeed far too high even compared to Kota in Porthleven - which is also pricey. Hope it's success, but not at the expense of the other "eateries" in Portleven. Sue
