Rather grey morning, but at least it wasn't raining - although there were showers around
This afternoon we set off quite early to go to Godolphin House to see the "Man Engine" which was built to celebrate the fact that in July 2006, the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this remarkable achievement in 2016, the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Partnership has commissioned an exciting summer-long set of inspirational events and experiential happenings entitled Tinth, this includes the Man Engine
The largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in the UK. It has been travelling West since July 28th performing at lots of towns especially those associated with Mining. The Godolphin wealth came from mining
The road that passes Godolphin House was going to be closed at 3.30pm so we left home well before that and parked at the end of the woodland where we often walk the dogs - it's actually only around a hundred yards from the entrance to Godolphin House, but we wanted to give the dogs a run first
We met this lovely Labrador and his owner at the beautiful cottage on the edge of the woods at Godolphin
Some of the lorries arriving - road not yet closed
This is the massive vehicle that supports the Man Engine - enabling it to rise etc.
After a cup of tea and cake at the Piggery cafe we walked a little way up Godolphin Hill - loved this sign under an Oak Tree which is the emblem of The National Trust
As we climbed up the hill the view was super - think this must be Carn Brea
Looking over to the dishes at Goonhilly
Think this might be the pumping engine house and chimney of Great Work. We then walked back down and joined the trail of people making their way to the road
Just to show that it was going to be difficult to get photos and unfortunately for me the child with a b.....y monkey on his back sitting on dad's shoulders was in every photo - even though I could turn the screen and hold the camera high !
A very different setting for the Man Engine as it has mostly been in towns
Quite a narrow gap in the trees - here it is handing a memento to the "compere" to present to Godolphin House for them to display
Lots of steam
At the end they asked for people to move so that those from the back could get a bit closer
Road was still closed - although the cars would soon be coming out of the car park - we only had to walk a little way and then turn left
and go back through the woods to the car. A good plan that came together !
AMAZING ! clever people to create something so iconic.thanks Sue.macca.
