Up & out early for the Newlyn Fish Festival

We were really pleased to see that the fog had cleared overnight and the sun was trying to shine over towards Newlyn.
As we walked along the seafront towards Newlyn, Scillonian III was just going past Mousehole on her way to the Isles of Scilly.

Oystercatcher

Digging deep for breakfast

The Fishermens' Memorial

Tom waiting for the crowds on Newlyn's busiest day of the year.

Stunning Protea

As well as all the interest on the water there were many super stalls selling craftwork, wonderful food and this plant stall with lots of Proteas and other fairly tender plants - after last winter's frosts I decided to resist !

Luggers galore !

Ripple to the left and Ibis to the right with Barnabus in the middle

Ibis

The Mevagissey based lugger Ibis which we photographed coming across Mount Bay on Friday.

The Childrens Friend

Another Lugger with such a lovely name

Snowdrop

One of my favourites and frequently out in Mounts Bay this lovely Classic boat Snowdrop leaving the Harbour

A Clucky Chicken !

Full marks for effort, to publicise the new Farmers Market at the top of Causewayhead in Penzance.
Nick's next door neighbour Jake's Go For It,
going nowhere today !

PZ1

Often seen working right in front of the house

The St Piran

The Fisheries Protection vessel, sadly as with last year the queue was too long to take a look around - must try again next year !

The Inshore Lifeboat

The ILB a very fast RIB and running neck and neck with the All Weather Boat on rescues this year when I last saw the list.

RNLI Lifeboat Beth Sell

We managed to get a quick visit to the Lifeboat as they were about to prepare for their display. This is the Beth Sell, which has all the latest equipment on board and is here substituting for the Ivan Ellen, whilst it is being upgraded to the same standard.
Take a look at Keith's West Cornwall Photos http://keithhargreaves.blogspot.com/ to see both Lifeboats later in the day with a Dolphin joining in the display !
Exploring the Lifeboat

Up on top

Never too early to start the training !

Looking inside !

Rather resembling the bridge of the Starship Enterprise

Lifeboat Display

Man Overboard - who drew the short straw !

To the Rescue !

Showing off !

The lifeboat came back down the harbour to show the manoeuvrability of the vessel (think he's been watching too much Top Gear)

Cornish Sea Shanties

These singers were really going for it.
Absoloutely superb !

Homeward Bound

As many of the visiitors do not know that dogs are not allowed on the Quay, the local Brownies provide a much needed "dog sitting " service. We on the other hand, had to head home as we don't like to leave Charlie & Tilly for more than 4 hours.
Not sure of the name of this lugger that was just returning "through the gaps" as we walked out of Newlyn.
Tom now has lots of company as the crowds walk along towards Newlyn

On the Boating Lake

As we had parked the car near the Boating Lake, I took a look what was zooming around. I think everybody was at the Fish Festival as there was only this one, but a nice one !

Le Diamant

The mist cleared a little to show the cruise ship Le Diamant anchored off Mousehole/Newlyn, which arrived this morning - such a pity the weather is so murky and damp as Mounts Bay certainly doesn't look it's best. I gather the ship is mainly used by French tourists. For more photographs of her and her launches see the link to West Cornwall Photos on the right.

Penzance from Long Rock

Not quite as misty down here as it was in Perranuthnoe.
Struggled to get the camera to focus on this super pair of Working Cocker Spaniels having fun on Long Rock Beach

FY519 - Ibis

A couple of shots of this lovely old vessel the Fowey registered Ibis which came past on her way into Penzance or Newlyn. May be here for the Newlyn Fish Festival on Monday.

Mounts Bay Sailing Club - awayday !

An assortment of dinghies from Mounts Bay Sailing Club came round to Perranuthnoe for lunch today.
Preparing to head for the beach
Looks like some of the surfers got a bit of a suprise as the dinghies came past.
As I walked along the beach to take some more photos of the dinghies I noticed that these dead little Shrimp type things were all along the tide line, must have been hundreds of them.
Lots of dinghies of various shapes and sizes making the beach look rather exotic.

After lunch off they go !

Whilst most of the dinghys managed to get through the waves fairly easily, no 506 had a bit of a struggle against a slightly bigger set of waves !
Slightly bigger wave just at the wrong moment !
nearly over, but well saved !
and, this time they made it out to join the others
Last one out was a bit tricky as there was only the two of them to man-handle it through the waves.

Marazion Marsh

Stopped off at Marazion Marsh this morning, nice to see that the pair of Swans managed to raise three cygnets to a good size. No sign of the Spotted Crake that's been around for several days, probably hiding from the strong wind in the rushes.

Lighthouse Pier, Penzance

Looking across to Lighthouse Pier, in Penzance on a very windy day with lots of white horses. Scillonian III took nearly 1hr longer to get to St Mary's this morning, with her speed reduced to 7 knots at times, so it must have been very lively out there !
