Spotted these two hardy souls heading out from the beach, looking well wrapped up for the bitterly cold weather.
I feel rather guilty as I haven't left the house, other than for a quick trip onto the balcony to take photos.
Wonderful effects of the light on the sea with one of the many huge dark clouds that have passed by today !
The ploughing re-commenced today - even though the weather was so cold and changeable there were quite a number of walkers having to negotiate the footpath at the same time !
Hail on the balcony today - but none of the forecast snow - so far !
Took this whilst Jim & Nick were out walking the dogs in the woods - more hail !
As I took a look through the 'scope at BG Dublin out in the shipping lanes I noticed this large number of Gannets that have been fishing over this shoal of fish for quite a while. When I first saw them they were diving in, but now most are probably so full they need a rest before attempting to fly again ! !

A few more from Saturdays walk.

Got told off for not looking at the photo's Jim took on his little Sony Cybershot - so many photos, so little time !

A distant shot taken through the 'scope of the Tall Ship Pacific Swift leaving Newlyn this morning after having been towed in by the Lifeboat, then been searched by Customs for almost a week - nothing found, they've obviously repaired their engine and I assume are continuing their journey to Holland.

Quite a fine if chilly day, so we decided to drive down to the Eastern end of Porthleven and walk along the coast to the Penrose Walks which run alongside Loe Pool.
Looking back along the coast with Tye Rock House up on the right. This was the height that the waves reached in this winters biggest storm (so far !) on November 13th. Many superb pphotos were taken that day !
Looking along the coast to the Trewavas Mine Engine Houses & Chimneys
Amazing that so many of these observation boxes are still around. Even more so here where so much of the coast has eroded, so much so that many years ago the road leading to Loe Bar went into the sea ! You have to park further up and climb up & over a hill now to get back onto the old road !
Loe Bar separating Loe Pool from the sea, recently after weeks of heavy rainfall the water level was rising in Loe Pool & therefore in the River Cober which runs through lower Helston, they decided that they needed to drain (pump ?) water out over the bar and out to sea - the pipe is still there - I assume in case it's needed again this winter.

The calm waters of Loe Pool

On the Western side of Loe Bar The Penrose Walks begin, they pass right through the Penrose Estate and eventually finish near the Boating Lake in Helston. We walked right along towards Penrose house, but needed to turn round to get back to the car in daylight.
Right across the other side of the lake were quite a number of Grey Herons & Shags just sitting around looking bored !

Large numbers of Pochards on the lake
It always seems to be the same - three male and one female !
The sun shining on the colourful heads of the Pochards
This beautiful area of Loe Pool is known as Carminowe Creek
Back to Loe Bar, a popular spot for fishing - must be good as it's quite a long walk to get there !
As we came back to the coast the lighting was very dramatic with several huge rain clouds, this one loomed to be near Perranuthnoe & when we got home we could see it had rained - so a lucky escape as we would normally have been out with the dogs at that time !

Sunshine & White Horses !

Caught in a shaft of sunlight the Dutch cargo vessel Rakel, which is supposed to be heading for Tywyn (there are 2 in Wales not sure which !) which had turned and headed into the bay for shelter as the Northerly wind would have made her trip from Lands End most uncomfortable
That kind of a day again, with rather more sunny periods, but again a strong bitterly cold wind.
As we set off on our walkies, I noticed this beautiful emerald green cushion of moss on the wall a sure sign of how wet it's been. Fortunately the Hottentot Figs are still thriving despite all the frost & cold.
Looking down across the newly polythene covered fields that were rippling in the wind. The farmer has left his plough in the field next to us, so he must be coming back to do the fields along the coast - shame ! !
The first time we have done the walk up to Trebarvah this year as the footpath had got so muddy. At the moment they're all muddy !
The view from Trebarvah this evening
The little Dutch Cargo Vessel Rakel at anchor off Penlee Quarry waiting for the wind to drop !
As we walk down the hill back towards the village there was no sign of some of the Ednovean Farm horses that I noticed back in their field alongside the footpath - I expect they were back in their stable in the warm !

From the balcony !

Sorry, no photo opportunities today - a chilly day of sunny periods & huge dark clouds, but only very light rain showers. The great Perranuthnoe potato planting continued although with fewer tractors. They still have the fields right down by the coast to do, so there's another major footpath damaged Grrrrr !

Wednesday, 27 January 2010

I stopped off at Marazion Marsh, but they were still burning the piles of reeds they'd cut, so there was very little to be seen. Took this just before the wind changed and the smoke got me, so I walked along to the other side of the railway bridge to take one or two pics.
The problem with this side of The Marsh is that you're so far away from the birds - but a few Teal look to have moved over here to get away from reed cutters.
The Marsh with the newly cleared channels looking good, shame about all the smoke though !
Looks like this Grey Heron is getting it's Spring plumage. It was over by the railway line, keeping well away from all the smoke & humans !
Lots of washing and preening going on this morning.
The footpath just about surviving the first ploughing, but later in the day it had gone !

Walkies !

Looking out to sea from Men Dhu Point I said to Jim that I had a feeling we might get a sunset even though we'd not really seen the sun all day.
No beach today, so a disappointed Charlie had to walk the footpath

Sunset behind the Church and Perranuthnoe Churchtown

Well, I was right, as we reached The Victoria & turned to look towards The Church it was quite spectacular.
As we walk along the footpath towards home we just had to stand and look !
Oh dear, when we went out the footpath was marked by the tractor tyres, but not too bad - but whilst we were out they planted the spuds, fertilized them & covered them with polythene and the footpath had gone ! Still pleased they didn't knock the post down as it carries our electricity
cable.
The view from our top patio in the garden - the whole bay looking beautiful.
Just beginning to fade, but still stunning

Sorry a cold grey boring old day !

We woke up to a hard frost this morning and it has been bitterly cold and grey all day - although my weather forecast on this blog said sun all day !
The most exiting thing to happen was the gang of farm workers arrived to plant the expected potatoes in the fields in front of us. Lots of ploughing, riddling, planting, spraying then covering with polythene. If we have a really big wind we might find our house all wrapped up one morning !
I suspect the weather will be similar tomorrow, so nothing to look forward to except another visit to the dentist !
