Looking down into Piskies Cove as we climb up the hill towards Cudden Point
Part of the mast of HMS Warspite which after great service in both World Wars was on her way to be scrapped when, in a huge storm she broke her tow and grounded on the Mountomopus Ledge - she then re-floated and ended up in Prussia Cove.  They managed to move her to Marazion, but she really didn't want to leave and they never managed to get her under tow again. Don't know if they salvaged her in the bay, or if she just went under the waves.
Looking at the quieter Eastern end of Praa Sands

  1. Morning Sue,
once again a big "Thank You" for all these wonderful pictures.
A few words on "HMS Warspite":
After the ship ran aground at Prussia Cove and then was towed to Marazion, they later towed it 150 yards nearer to the coast and then scrapped it there, some sources say it lasted till 1955, some 1956. Not only one part of the masts survived at the headland near to Porth en Alls, but there were some parts stored at the estate, and, finding some pictures at Flickr.com under the word "HMS Warspite" there must be a bench made of teak from the battleship standing may be in Morrab Gardens. And, quite funny, because I stood in front of it a few years ago, when I visited the Imperial War Museum in London, one of the huge gun turrets of "HMS Warspite" is on display in front of the museum.
There is also a memorial tablet at the wall in Marazion near to the place where the ship was finnaly scrapped.
See you soon, by the way, have you met my sister?
    All the best
    Gerd

  2. Here I am again,
after looking around at the web I found an interesting page of someone who has seen the wreck both at Prussia Cove and Marazion and, among others, you can find a picture of the battleship at Marazion. Here is the link: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~treevecwll/visitorshw.htm

  3. Many thanks Gerd - I've found it and will look at it this evening when I've more time. I remember Scillonian Phill Deason telling me that he saw it in Marazion when he was a youngster - must have looked huge to him ! Bet you're hoping that you get the same weather as Trixie & family are getting now (hope I've remembered her name correctly )Sue
