This is the MSC Flaminia ( remember the MSC Napoli !) on fire on July 17th - she was too far from land for helicopter rescue and a tanker changed course and rescued the crew from a life raft. There was one dead, one missing and one very severely burned who is still critically ill.
It has been kept at least 200 miles away from land whilst the fires were at least got under control.
This is it on 13th August, still smoking, but the owners have requested that it be brought along the Channel to German waters where they can hopefuly deal with any problems before bringing it into a German Port..
Under the instructions of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency she has been brought to a position almost directly South of us - probably 40 ish miles out. The two accompanying tugs have been joined by two more carrying Inspectors from the countries whose coast it will pass. They need to give it permission to pass along the channel. There appears to be a great deal of concern as to the hazardous nature of damaged vessel and it's cargo of containers.
Hope they keep it well away from the UK coast.
