Fascinating! I enjoyed looking at all the shapes the starlings made. I saw some recently as I drove through the desert to Scottsdale. It looked as if they were rolling - like passenger pigeons- where the flock rotated as they fed on the wing. UI like the collective noun for them, although starlings don't exactly murmur, do they?
ReplyDeleteIt really is a mesmerising sight - so many shapes - some of the corkscrew effects were magical. Quite funny to see people arriving to take photos of the sunset then look to The Mount and go OOh ! Knew there was a proper name for these gatherings, but had to look it up - just saying a large flock of Starlings just doesn't seem enough !
DeleteA pity it was sooo cold in the wind - woke to a power cut this morning with a very chilly house - but it's back on again in time for breakfast.
I think the murmurations are fascinating. I haven't seen it first hand yet. It must be mesmerizing.

Mesmerizing is the right word - you just can't take your eyes off them - and there were huge numbers joining from the East (Perranuthnoe etc.) all the time. Sue
DeleteNever did see the murmurations at Marazion. I think the starling numbers have grown considerably since I was there. Love the photos Sue. Well done. The shapes are fascinating. Ann x
ReplyDeleteMorning Ann, think these are probably mainly Winter visitors - from the continent - I saw them decending into the reeds on Marazion Marsh quite a few years ago, but although I've been several times since I've never been lucky enough to see it again - until this week and this time around The Mount. DeleteWe used to get thousands of starlings at Strumpshaw Fen (RSPB reserve ) close to us, the numbers have decreased dramatically over the last few years apparently they have headed south(Sue...have you pinched our starlings?)Today we saw at least a hundred swans on the marshes near Great Yarmouth...quite a sight.Have really enjoyed your starling pictures.macca.
ReplyDeleteThey've been missing from Marazion Marsh in recent years - at least nothing like the numbers they used to get - possibly the weather conditions have sent them West from further up country. Love to see a large gathering of Swans such beautiful birds.
DeleteWe've certainly got your wind today - seems to be turning a bit more to the North now - big silly hat day again tomorrow ! Sue
