Fisheries Protection vessel HMS Severn hiding in the gloom on the far side of the bay - with a couple of sailing dingheys close by - must have been cold out there !
Mount's Bay Gig Club had two training gigs out this morning - only 2 months to go until the World Championships on Scilly at the beginning of May

  1. What a coincidence. I just read on Radio Scilly that the World Gid Championships should be the biggest ever this year with two new Gig teams (one from Ireland!). I'd love to be over there during May. When we go we always watch the gig races on Wednesday and Friday eveings.

    1. I suspect that St Mary's is a very different place during that weekend - lots of boozy fun and very very busy ! Getting all the gigs over there is going to be a problem. But they do train very hard and it's their main event of the year - although lots of the clubs have their own weekends of racing. Presume you've seen the news of St Martin's Hotel - so sad - can't believe that the pub is still shut as well - they were lucky that other businesses had already got going. Sue

    1. I think that right from the start the St Martins Hotel was just too expensive to run in every way - we stayed twice - just for a couple of days tagged onto the end of our St Mary's or St Agnes holiday - superb spot, but the food (in our opinion) was not as good as Star Castle - although at the time Stewart (now at The Victoria in Perranuthnoe) was the chef - tiny portions when you've been out walking all day, are just not enough. Someone with money needs to do the changes as planned - but just not the money around now ! Sue

    3. Aaah ! the hill - the year my knee went it was a real problem - but we just take it slowly and try not to look too red in the face ! We have a room with a fenced in provate garden - which was wonderful the year that Wooster was only 6 month old. I think all the hotels are a good standard now - just according to taste & pocket ! 3. I agree with all the comments written here. We stay in a self catering right on Town beach where we can watch the world go by. We eat out every night and one of our favourites was Blues which has now closed, but quite enjoy Dibble and Grub and also The Gig shed now known as Spiros, not forgetting the Thai in Tolman Cafe, really good Thai food. Haven't stayed in Star Castle yet but hope to go and have an evening meal there this year.

    1. We did 16ish years of self catering, but we enjoy the big treat of the year - to stay in a hotel & be spoiled - as long as we can make it up the hill.
If you make it to the Star Castle try to dine in the conservatory - if you like fish dishes - lovely atmosphere & if as last year wonderful food ! We tend to just snack at lunchtime unless we're really tempted !Sue
