Whilst we were out yesterday the field next to the house had been ploughed - but the footpath had survived - a big thank you to Mr Skewes !
This is one of those photos that you have to really stare at to see why I took it - hiding in the clumps of soil are lots of Goldfinches - with Mr Robin giving orders from the sidelines
Robins are definitely one of the things I miss seeing here in SD, as well as blue tits, blackbirds, and even sparrows. We seem to have finches galore, as well as scrub jays at our feeder, but the real personalities are the humming birds who are teasers and hover just out of reach, sometimes, of the cats.
ReplyDeleteStill sounds lovely to me ! Our Robin is quite a bully - chasing all the birds away when he's around. The hummingbirds sound wonderful- I've seen them on TV. The closest we get of course is the Hummingbird Hawkmoth that hovers in a similar manner.
DeleteI seem to remember an American Robin that arrived on Scilly - but had a tell tale patch of green paint on it -came over on a ship I expect.
American robins are not as small and cheeky as the British robin. You would love to see a hummingbird's nest which is so small and sweet. The nests sometimes get blown down from the trees, but the birds seem to return to the same place every year.
DeleteI'm suprised that birds keep going back to the same place when the weather and general conditions have been so bad for them the year before - lots of the UK Ospreys are either late or have perished on migration from Africa.
DeleteThe Hummingbirds do sound lovely to be able to watch - but Robins have now been seen as not quite as cheeky as we thought - they can be quite brutal if there's a fight over territory - we saw a fight like that in the garden here !
