We had a wild and windy night - out NW of Lands End two French Fishermen were washed overboard the Fishing Vessel Neway.  The Scilly Lifeboat, together with  an SAR Sea King from RNAS Culdrose were out searching for many hours in at times a force 8 gale. Sadly since the men were not wearing life jackets  there was not much hope after the first hour, so the search was abandoned - The French are bringing in a Navy Vessel with its own helicopter to continue to search for the bodies.

  1. How very sad. One wonders why they had not taken shelter in a local fishing port if it was a Force 8 gale, or were they trying to get to one?

    1. These French Trawlers spend most of their time in our waters - staying beyond the three miles out to fish - they do not usually take shelter in Newlyn unless they have a problem - only if extreme conditions occurr will they come in. I'm sure they've been out in worse conditions, but obviously something went terribly wrong at some point. Neway is now heading home to France with a couple of the trawlers that assisted with the search.
