I understand the fountain was carved from a single block of Lamorna granite and was made in 1853 to celebrate the new town rail link with Truro which opened 25 Aug 1852. It had been positioned elsewhere in Penzance before coming to rest in St Anthony Gardens. What a shame the fountain wasn't resurrected rather than install that awful thing they call a fountain at the feet of Sir Humphry Davy's statue.

Sorry Ann missed your comment - I'd looked at an old photo of St. Anthony Gardens and the fountain used to stand in a beautiful pool of water. Agree about the really nasty thing they called a water feature
Deleteat the feet of Sir Humphry Davy's statue - bet we all know what what's it's used for most !
The fountain in the picture was relocated from the front of St Johns Hall. On hot sunny days the fountain is switched on, it is still in operation. The original fountain and pool is situated near the car park, it is now been planted over.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. never seen it working - struggled to find the post with your comment as it was so long ago. Do hope they find the money to return Jubilee Pool to its former glory loved the view looking over to the sea beyond. Sue
