Both Penlee Lifeboats launched at 12pm this afternoon to conduct a joint medical exercise with RNLI lifeguards near St Michaels Mount. 7 casualties with various injuries including hypothermia and drowning were rescued and medically treated by the Lifeboat crews and Lifeguards but at 13:36 just as the exercise was finishing Falmouth Coastguard diverted the Lifeboats to a real incident at Poldhu Cove.
2 swimmers had got into difficulties in a large swell and required assistance. Rescue 924 Helicopter, Mullion Cliff Rescues teams and the Firefighter tri service were also tasked.
Thankfully just as the Helicopter and Lifeboats arrived on scene the swimmers made it safely back to the beach, the lifeboats and helicopter stayed on scene while the casualties were being assessed but were stood shortly after. One swimmer was taken to hospital by Ambulance.
Rescue 924 Helicopter seized the opportunity and conducted an exercise with both Penlee Lifeboats on the way back to Newlyn. Both lifeboats returned to station at 16:00.
