Thought today was going to be much better with lots of lovely sunshine. Got up to find it pouring with rain ! ! As this huge bank of cloud cleared I hoped we might then see the sun, but sadly it was yet again a day of heavy showers and occasional short sightings of the big orange ball. The Churchway footpath which runs alongside the tall garden wall, had become a stream with water running down from the hill above. A small trench has been dug to divert the water down the side of the field since lots more rain is forecast for this week.
Strange light out to sea and by the look of it lots of sand moving around
Still can't get used to the yellow fields in these photos taken from the balcony. I suppose they'll be along to plough them soon - I might have to lie in front of the tractor to stop them ploughing right across the footpath !

Lots of heavy showers of rain and some hail, but this was the closest we got to the sun.
Just before we got hit by another hefty shower the sun found a gap in the dark clouds

After the storm comes The Surf

Nice light on the water as a big bank of dark clouds passes over. I've just noticed that the surfers vans and cars are arriving and the waves are looking larger as the swell from last night arrives.
Just looked at the St Ives webcam and it looks like the waves are getting blown out over on the North Coast.
The fishing boat Emma Louise is still out there - they really do earn their money !
Taken from Lands End Weather - showing probably the last of several 80mph gusts.
The centre of the low pressure, which seemed to hang around for a long time and dropped a fair amount of rain - it eventually moved away enough for the wind to turn towards the NW or West.
Apologies for the lack of photos recently. It's been a bit hectic - the house electrics are all signed off and the building work should be inspected next week and hopefully the plumbing & heating soon. We've had continual heavy showers which has meant either short dog walks or off to the woods for most of last week.
I've been working like mad, printing the Perranuthnoe Calendars and also clearing the downstairs hall, (which had been used as storage all manner of things) so that George can come and fit the carpet on the stairs and the hall.
I'm sitting here at 01.30 because the weather is so bad I couldn't possibly get any sleep. I've just watched the local weather forecast on the BBC i player to see if I missed a major weather warning, but no ! ! she actually said that the wind might reach gale force - reach it - we've had many gusts in the 70's and now several of 80mph the tiles are rattling, and the rain is smashing onto the window. It looks like it might turn from the SW we have -right at us - to a more Northerly direction which is much more protected by hedges etc. In the meantime the dogs are refusing to go out and I will stay in the lounge tonight as Charlie get's very scared of all the noise.
Just looked at the AIS and noticed that the Newlyn fishing boat the Emma Louise has rounded Lands End but still seems to be fishing - or possibly hoping to ride out the storm.

Jim took the dogs down to the beach this afternoon. He had to watch out as the big waves were rolling in a long way. We're off to The Victoria tonight for one of their Special Voucher Meals - £14.99 each. As anyone who's been there will know that's a real bargain, although from a more limited menu.
Waves are still quite big and stacking back quite a way.
We don't see Charlie out in front very often - I think that Tilly has her eye on the Oystercatcher ahead - hence the head down stance.
Charlie moving too fast for Jim today - it's slightly out of focus. Not sure why he sticks his tongue out, but he even sleeps like that now !

The view from Penzance this morning

St Michaels Mount with a bit of sunshine on it today.
Almost looking like an oil painting, after the wild and windy night the sea surging into Marazion

Porthleven this afternoon

On my way home from Helston I drove down to Porthleven to take a few photos. No huge waves today, but it's always a super spot for photography.
Looking at it today it's hard to believe that after the big storm, the waves were higher than Tye Rock House.
Not the giant waves of 10 days ago, but still worth watching
Big waves crashing onto Loe Bar which separates the Loe Pool from the sea
Nice light looking out to sea

Wild and windy again !

Just a few photos of the very wild conditions here again, the gusts of wind are still rising at the moment, and the photographs are not really of the usual standard, due to the wind and spray and rather grey conditions.

The Greeb rocks

Not so much giant splashes as just an angry boiling sea being driven on shore by the 50 plus mph wind.
Had to crouch behind a rock to take this as the wind & spray were almost too much to stand up in
The sea looking very wild all the way across to Cudden Point

Another day of wind and rain, which stopped during the afternoon. So we took the dogs on the shorter walk up to Trebarvah. The forecast seems to be more of the same for most of the week !
Just a quick shot of Perranuthnoe as we trudged through the mud up to Trebarvah. During last weeks storms the muddy water ran off the fields and caused problems for several of the homes up here - they've created dams and channels to try to get the standing water away safely.
Looking at the fields, we've suddenly noticed that all the grass in front of us has been killed off, so it looks like it'll be back to cabbages or caulies again soon. Must try to get hold of the farmer to plead with him not to plough right across the footpath again ! !

The bloggers, blogged !

Jim took this at the Tredavoe Christmas Craft Fayre, Keith (West Cornwall Photos)on the left and George (Georges Photos & Carpet Fitter Extrordinaire !)
I've driven past this many times as it's right by a busy mini roundabout, but took a walk from the car park in Penzance yesterday to take some photos. What superb idea, instead of chopping the whole tree down, the carvings are all round the trunk.
It's quite crowded at the top !
The Eagle on the top of the tree showing the beautiful colours of the wood
Is this the Spirit of the Tree ?
If it didn't have little horns I'd think this was a Kangaroo
A Foxy pair !
Really a Woody Woodpecker !
Cheeky little Rabbits
Lots of Squirrels running up & down the trunk
I almost missed this nice little Bat

A visit to Lamorna Cove

We had to take Charlie to the Vets this afternoon, so took a flask for a cup of tea and carried on out to Lamorna Cove. I have to say that looking back at the cove from the quay, the huge piles of overhanging rocks from the old quarry fill me with feelings of foreboding. But, turn and look the other way and it's a super spot for sea-watching !
Still some big waves after last nights storm and with the sun still shining out on the point (called Carn-du) to the left of Lamorna, together with a blue sea the effect was quite stunning.
The waves were smashing into the rocks all the way down from the point
These are for Francis, who was asking about the condition of the Quay at Lamorna. As you can see the damage has not been repaired for all sorts of reasons - due to adverse conditions - me not wanting to get a soaking two days running ! - this was the best I could do !
