Gannets ! !

We've never been lucky enough to get this close to Gannets before - they usually stay further out to sea in Mount's Bay.

  2. Hi again Betty, we were really thrilled that there were 6 of them swooping around really close in compared to their normal behaviour. Stunning birds and really big when they get this close ! Sue

  3. Trult amazing shots. I've tried to photgraph them but as you say they are always so far away. What lens have you got out of interest?

    1. Hi GG, it was a real treat to see them that close - in fact at times we were zooming out as they got too close - took a huge number of shots most not great - but it's worth it for the good ones. Jim has a 70-300mm zoom lens on his Canon (he has another Wide angle/tele for more general shots) and I've just got my Panasonic FZ100 with a 24x zoom which does well in good light like yesterday. 4. What wonderful images of Gannets! I love these birds and never tire of watching them plummet into the waves when we are in St Ives. Fantastic to be so close.

    1. Hi Julie, We really were so lucky that the conditions brought the Gannets in so close, the only other time we've been that close is when on a boat on Scilly. We hope to get to St Ives before it gets really really busy ! Sue

  5. Thanks for your reply. I too have a Canon 70 - 300, so I'd better try a bit harder in future! I'm off to Scilly for the third year running in a couple of weeks and want to take some pics of the puffins. I'm still learning at photography ... but your pics are always super. Thanks

  6. Hi GG, try to go on a pelagic or Western Rocks trip with Joe Pender - there's a link to his photos on the IOS links - he's the master of sea bird photography. Just realised we're off there in about 3 weeks - scary moment I've got lots to do ! ! Sue

  7. Yes I know of him. I follow his website too and all the other scilly sites. Cornwall and Scilly are our two favourite places. We like going on Mark and Susie Groves Firebrand IV as well, but a pelagic trip is on the cards this year we hope.
