Mousehole looking much quieter this morning as we retraced our steps of Sunday to start the sad job of removing the Lost Dog posters

Paul Church, with its tall tower which often appears on the hill above Mousehole in photos
"Paul Church is
set high up on a ridge overlooking Mount’s Bay, the tower was built early in the
15th Century and is one of the tallest in Cornwall, measuring eighty-nine feet,
with a beacon turret of twenty feet totalling one hundred and nine feet in all.
It was possibly sited to act as a ‘sea-mark’ for shipping, to replace an earlier
chapel acting the same in Mousehole."
Fascinating history - once again the Spanish invasion of Mousehole is in there !

We must get up there next trip, haven't gotten that far up into Mousehole, my list is getting longer, thanks :-) Sue K
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, we hadn't realised how many people drive to Paul & walk down the lane to Mousehole until we were there hunting at the weekend and we have also found Raginnis, which is how to get to the coastal footpath from Mousehole to Lamorna without starting at sea level in Mousehole & climbing Raginnis Hill. Sue
DeleteMorning Sue,
ReplyDeleteit's good to read about Paul Church and see the picture and it's really fascinating to dive into history of that church. Most people only see the monument for Dolly Pentreath in the churchyard wall, but there is so much to discover inside. My special interest was on the stained glass windows behind the altar, remembering William Torquill Macleod Bolitho, who was killed in WW1 near Ypres at Hooge Chateau. He has no known grave and is remembered at the Menin Gate in Ypres. You can read about his fate (and of many others) when you click the link to the history of Paul Church you mention in your caption, next click the link at bottom, go to Paul Parish Church Website look for resources and click "War Memorials". There you find two Bolithos, William is the one remembered on the Windows.
The sacrifice of all these brave men should not be forgotten.
See you soon
Gerd
Morning Gerd, it's been strange that very unfortunate circumstances have in fact taken us to places that we have ignored for years. As you say the history of places like Mousehole & Paul is quite amazing and so often ignored by most of the visitors. The current Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall is Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE - obviously the great military traditiona of the Bolitho family was carried on. Won't be long now. Sue
