The Maritime & Coastguard Agency have just announced that MSC Flaminia is now making her way I assume under tow, slowly along the channel with her accompanying three tugs heading for the port of Wilhelmshaven in Germany as she is German registered and where she has been granted a safe haven. She will be kept off the coast whilst further examination is made before she is brought into the port.
This has been a long and sorry saga for this vessel since she caught fire on July 14th followed by an explosion - one crew dead one missing presumed dead and one seriously burned. The remainder of the crew were rescued and brought to Falmouth for onward travel. Since then the trio of tugs which were called in by the Salvors have fought the fire in a ship which was found to be carrying 149 containers of the total of 2,876 were considered to be "dangerous goods" No country seemed to wish to offer safe haven to the vessel as there were so many questions about the state of the ship/fires/cargo !
She has been out in the Atlantic ever since and once the fires were considered to be out, she was brought much closer to the UK during the last week inspectors from the countries with coasts along the route she will take have undertaken an inspection & taken samples of the contaminated water etc on board. She was finally given permission to enter the channel this weekend and it would appear they're off ! Hopefully there will soon be an end to this sad saga - but it has made many more people aware of the fact that these container vessels that we see out at sea all the times are loaded with so many containers filled with dangerous and possibly explosive substances.
Quite amazing to think that after a fire like this her structure still appears to be sound and the main superstructure is both untouched, but also operational and she has power and steering etc. She was obviously a well built vessel.
