"At the foot of the cove's slipway is a tunnel dug by tin miners from St. Just to give farmers horse-and-cart access to the beach to collect seaweed to use as a fertiliser.
There is another tunnel, leading seawards, which was the fishermen's access to the tidal 'hulleys' built in the rocks to store shellfish. The 'hulleys', which ceased being used about 20 years ago, had wooden floors and topcovers with trapdoors and were used to store the shellfish prior to taking the catch to market once or twice a week. The rope laid down the beach is used to steady boats while landing." (John Chappell 2006)
Looking along the coast towards The Minack Theatre and Porthcurno
Crumbs, multilingual signs English, Cornish and German !
Busy around Wolf Rock Lighthouse
The Isles of Scilly from Gwennap Head - not the clearest we've seen them from here. Round Island Lighthouse to the right - St Mary's to the left.
Longships Lighthouse to the left and the Lands End Visitor Centre to the right
Homeward bound - this group of Gannets had been plunging and feeding in Mount's Bay all day and were heading home around Lands End all the way to South Wales where they nest
Nothing at all on the AIS to state what this tug is towing - rather odd looking.
We then walked back to the cafe for a cup of tea before wending our way along the narrow lanes to head for home.
What a wonderful Cornish day ! lovely pictures and info.too ! What a wonderful coastline it is for viewing and walking,a surprise at every turn ( wish I could still do it !) but hey ho it's a wonderful morning here...and i'm off to the the Chiropractor.....what more could I ask for ? ha ! I shall have a lovely coffee at Waitrose....with an extra shot ! bliss ! thanks Sue for bringing Cornwall to us every single day macca.( sometimes I forget I live in a beautiful county too !)
ReplyDeleteNorfolk was somewhere we used to love to visit as you know and it is lovely, but of course very different to the West ! Everywhere looks good when the sun shines and the sky is blue !
DeleteHope the visit to the Chiropractor went well - and you enjoyed your coffee - one thing you have that we don't - Waitrose - still not one down this end of Cornwall - think one is planned for Truro soon. Much as we didn't need another Sainsburys, I am enjoying shopping there - super big and airy in there ! Sue
Good morning, Sue.
ReplyDeleteI can only repeat Macca's words: Thank you for bringing Cornwall to us every day with these wonderful pictures. About the strange thing on the platform: I think it's a grab digger. If you enter the words at google and click on pictures, you will find several examples looking very similar. Only 66 days till we are back to lovely Perranuthnoe.
All the best, Gerd
I'm sure you're right about the grab digger - all sorts of odd things head round Lands End heading for the wind farms in the NW of England. I was surprised that I couldn't find the tug on the AIS - still the weather was calm for rounding Lands End.
DeletePleased to see that you are coming back to Perran in August, hope we see you then ! Sue
